UConn gained an athletic wing on Saturday night with the commitment of Emmitt Matthews, a 6’6″ three-star recruit from Washington state.

Matthews was on campus for his official visit this weekend and, like James Akinjo earlier this month, the Huskies secured the commitment immediately after. Even without a top-100 ranking, Matthews earned offers from a host of other major schools including Washington, West Virginia and The Ghost of Georgetown. As we learn more about Matthews’ recruitment in the coming days, expect to see assistant coach Raphael Chillious’s recent stint in Matthews’ home state mentioned often. [Update: yea, like this.]
Thin and athletic, Matthews has good ball skills and a nice lefty touch. He (obviously) projects as a multi-year player for the Huskies and will have to prove he can consistently make jump shots at the collegiate level to climb his way up the depth chart.
UConn had been shopping for a wing, even with the commitment of Sid Wilson. Call it Larrier Insurance™. With Matthews now in the fold — and the last (technically) open 2018 scholarship filled — Kevin Ollie can now turn most of his attention to the 2019 class (though Lukas Kisunas, a 2018 big boy, will be on campus this week).
Hey! Isn’t good news kinda fun? Keep these coming.
