UConn head coach Kevin Ollie is on some hot streak. Today, Ollie secured the commitment of 2016 point guard Alterique Gilbert, a four-star recruit out of Georgia.
Gilbert marks the third addition to the 2016-2017 roster, joining forward Mamadou Diarra and VCU transfer Terry Larrier. UConn will lose at least five scholarship players next offseason (Gibbs, Miller, Nolan, Calhoun, Amilo). With a flurry of early commitments, Ollie appears determined to reload and hedge against the possible departures of Daniel Hamilton, Amida Brimah and Rodney Purvis.
Gilbert has been linked to the Huskies for several months, and took an official visit to Storrs in April. A Dime Back’s Peter Bard heard late last week that the commitment was imminent.
Gilbert will pair with 2015 recruit Jalen Adams to create a formidable backcourt. Gilbert profiles as a pure point guard. He relies on quickness to navigate the floor, is said to have good court vision for his age, and should be able to bulk up a little as he works with UConn’s strength and conditioning staff.
