It may be the offseason for fans, but Kevin Ollie and his staff are doing work on the recruiting trail. This weekend, they’ll host Juwan Durham (#27 in 247 composite for 2016) for an official on-campus visit. Durham, a 6-10 PF from Tampa, Florida, shows the kind of length that the Huskies usually seek in their big men, but is far more polished than the bigs that UConn has brought in recently.
Durham is comfortable and effective in attacking the basket off the dribble, or pulling up to take a jumper, while still controlling the paint on defense and blocking shots away from the basket. A player with Durham’s size and length who runs the floor as well as he does is a huge asset for a team that wants to attack in transition, and especially for the ‘position-less’ basketball that Kevin Ollie seems to want to institute fully at UConn.
Durham’s recruitment took a hit in February when he tore his ACL, but he’s expected to be back for his senior season at Tampa Prep. While Ollie has made Wilbraham & Monson’s Wenyen Gabriel a priority, Durham is more than an adequate backup plan. At the moment, Gabriel appears to be a Duke lean, so expect the Huskies to put on the full-court press for Durham’s visit, hopefully with ambassador Rodney Purvis leading the way.
