[Updated December 5, 2017]
Tyler Olander gets the credit, but what if I told you there were 87 (87!) Huskies who have won more championships than Jim Boeheim? Well, with the Huskies and Orange meeting for the first time since 2013, now’s as good a time as any to learn who all those players are.
This list spans four programs and includes both players and coaches. Read them all. There will be a test at halftime.
Men’s Soccer:
Ray Reid (coach): Reid won the 2000 National Championship with UConn, but before coming to Storrs, he captured three more with Division II Southern Connecticut
Field Hockey:
Nancy Stevens (coach)
Diane Wright (coach)
Cheri Herr (coach)
Paul Caddy (coach)
Anna Middendorf
Asia Crawford
Chloe Hunnable
Chrissy Davidson
Darby Smith
Efthimia Kutrubis
Emily Walsh
Jamie Schlotterer
Katie Guarini
McKenzie Townsend
Megan Palmisano
Montana Fleming
Nina Klein
Olivia Bolles
Roisin Upton
Sophie Bowden
Tamara de Nobriga
Karlie Heistand
Maureen Schott
Casey Umstead
Charlotte Veitner
Men’s Basketball:
Jim Calhoun (coach): When Boeheim won his lone title in 2003, Calhoun apparently could not stand being tied with him. The next year, he guided the Huskies to championship No. 2. Then Final Four No. 3 five years later. Then championship No. 3 two years after that. Then Kevin Ollie came in and won a championship. In that time, Syracuse has reached the Final Four just once and lost in the semifinal.
Kevin Ollie (coach): KO got his first ring in 2011 as an assistant. He got his second in 2014 by guiding the Huskies past a 1, 2, 3 and 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Syracuse lost its first tournament game that year to Dayton.
George Blaney (coach)
Glen Miller (coach)
Karl Hobbs (coach)
Ricky Moore (player and coach): From #SlickRickFaceOnDemFolks to teaching his players how to #SlickRickFaceOnDemFolks
Kevin Freeman (player and DOBO)
Niels Giffey
Shabazz Napier:
Tyler Olander: Has more National Championships than Jim Boeheim
Women’s Basketball (this will take a while):
Geno Auriemma (coach, God): My favorite Geno fact: Until he took over, UConn had never won more than five games in a row. He won his first eight. But this isn’t about his greatness. It’s about how his greatness dwarfs Boeheim’s. Geno won his first in 1995. He had three before Boeheim had one. He’s won the same year Boeheim did, then won six more after that.
Chris Dailey (coach): See above for Geno. Same goes for Chris. Same. Exact. Thing.
Jamelle Elliott (player and coach)
Marisa Moseley (coach)
Shea Ralph (player and coach)
Svetlana Abrosimova (player and student assistant coach): Bet you forgot about this one.
Tonya Cardoza (coach)
Jack Eisenmann (DOBO)
Sarah Darras (Director of women’s basketball administration)
Ann Strother
Ashley Battle
Ashley Valley
Asjha Jones
Barbara Turner
Breanna Stewart: Perhaps the best thing about Stewie is that she is from Syracuse, but knew better. Also good: UConn is playing at Colgate this year as a homecoming game for her…because, presumably, Syracuse was too scared to schedule the game.
Bria Hartley
Briana Pulido
Brianna Banks
Carolina Doty
Courtney Ekmark
Diana Taurasi: Here’s Diana talking about how awesome she is.
Gabby Williams: And counting.
Heather Buck
Jacqui Fernandes
Jessica Moore
Kaili McLaren
Kalana Greene
Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis: KML hit all of the threes. This is important because three is also 3x the number of championships that Jim Boeheim has.
Kelly Faris
Kia Nurse: And counting.
Kiah Stokes
Lorin Dixon
Maria Conlon
Maya Moore
Meghan Gardler
Morgan Tuck
Morgan Valley
Moriah Jefferson
Natalie Butler
Nicole Wolff
Saniya Chong
Stacey Marron
Stefanie Dolson
