#3 Khalid El-Amin – (1997-2000) by Meghan Bard Khalid El-Amin’s larger-than-life personality, and his ability to put a spark in his teammates’ play, made him a beloved UConn player. While he never looked like an elite ball player, the fire-cracker point guard from Minneapolis won three straight state championships in high school before coming to Storrs. El-Amin was the starting point guard on the team that “shocked the world” and won UConn’s first National Championship. El-Amin also orchestrated one of the most amazing come-from-behind victories against Pittsburgh when he hit this shot and then told all those Pitt fans exactly what was what. The Chicago Bulls drafted El-Amin in the second round of the 2000 NBA draft, but El-Amin’s pro career has literally taken him all over the world, including Europe, Russia and Israel. He currently plays in Turkey. Career Points: 1650 Career Rebounds: 319 Career Assists: 479 Career Steals: 186 Career Blocks: 10 _____ 1st Team Big East 1999-2000 |
#14 Jim Abromaitis – (1975-1979) by Peter Bard Jim Abromaitis’ stupid son, Tim, chose to play at stupid Notre Dame instead of UConn, and annoyed me greatly while he was there. Jim, what the heck? You couldn’t get your son to go to your alma mater? That’s cold. We could have used that outside shooting. Abromaitis was a forward-center in the late 70s, as well as Tony Hanson’s BFF. Abromaitis was a smart big man, leading the team in rebounding as a sophomore and always showing a deft and clever scoring touch. He finished his career with over 1,000 points and 700 rebounds. Abromaitis was largely unheralded as a player, but he served as a solid bridge between the star power of Hanson and that provided by Mike McKay and Corny Thompson before spending the 1980s looking very “80s handsome.” Career Points: 1074 Career Rebounds: 717 Career Assists: 199 Career Steals: Records not kept Career Blocks: Records not kept _____ 1,000 point club |
Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.
Abromaitis looks like a certain friend of ours, only with hair…right, Peter?
