ADB Mailbag: Nog, Points and Tourney Chances

lol remember this shit?

It’s Friday. It’s the holidays. You have questions. Let’s get weird af.

Elvis asks: 1) Fave Bourbon? 2) Rocks or Neat? 3) Where does Jalen end up finishing on the all time scoring list?

Alex is the bourbon connoisseur of the group and he said unironically said Old Granddad so buy that. My favorite bottle in ADB HQ is Willett. Alex says neat. I say rocks because I am a delicate flower and need some cold water to stop from crying while I drink whiskey.

Jalen is at 1,478 at the moment — he passed Kevin Freeman for 19th place last game. I’m gonna guess Jalen ends up around 1,800 total, putting him in the 6-9 range all-time. He’s not catching Ray Allen at 5. I’ll say he passes Kemba, Boatright and Gordon and finishes 7th just behind Corny Thompson.

Junglehusky asks: I never drink egg nog. I assume it’s gross. Am I missing out?

Egg nog is good, but it can be a little heavy. I recommend cutting it with a little vodka and Kahlua for the ideal texture and flavor.

Nope, egg nog is gross

Meghan answered this question in a 2016 mailbag and gave a dope egg nog booze recipe.

TCF asks: what’s your take on Dan Hurley’s suit game so far this season? also, curious your thoughts on the market for UConn podcasts. Thanks.

Hurley’s suit game this year has been perfectly cromulent. He keeps it fairly conservative with the suits themselves, no fun, KO-esque patterns, mostly blues and greys. Fine. But they fit well, as is expected of someone with his salary, his ties are usually the correct length, everything matches and there are no stray tie clips flying about, unattached to shirt fronts. Would appreciate an amped up sock game, but really who wouldn’t?

As for the podcasts, I know we’ve been off our game this year, as the editing duties were eclipsed by parenting duties, but we’re working on getting our shit together for a new one soon. It’s so weird to think there has never, ever been a UConn podcast, a true hole in the market! It’s almost like there are no digital or print media podcasting about UConn sports. We definitely did not start sporadically podcasting nearly five years ago. Truly wild!

Jon asks: If UConn beats Villanova on Saturday, how good do they have to be in conference to get into the tournament? What’s their minimum viable product?

A couple things: beating Villanova would be super awesome, but it’s also possible in 45 days we look back and realize Nova was kinda trash — kinda like we view Syracuse now. The second part of your question is highly dependent on which games they win, not necessarily the total amount. Getting to 23 wins looks a lot different if it includes a few wins over the three real AAC teams (Cincy, Houston, UCF). Beating up on the ass end of the conference would be cool but we’ve not seen anything historically to make me think the selection committee will give the fourth or fifth best AAC team the benefit of the doubt. To safely get in, I think UConn needs to finish third in the league or better with no more than four conference losses — preferably none of the humiliating variety. That means winning games like at Tulsa, at Temple and at Wichita. And pulling off some key victories at home against good teams. Even better, they should just win the AAC Tourney.
