I’ve mulleted it over, and I’ve decided it’s time to talk about UConn basketball hair. UConn fans have been treated to some fantastic (and sometimes fantastically bad) hairstyles over the years.
Last year, Daniel Hamilton reigned supreme with his ‘do that just seemed to get taller as the season progressed. By the time the AAC Tournament rolled around DHam added about 4 inches in hair alone. Well played. But he’s getting a run for his money this year from freshman Steven Enoch. That hair game is on point. And let’s not leave out two-time National Champion with the great hair AND beard, everyone’s favorite German, Neils Giffey. #NFG4LYFE
Of course, UConn hair hasn’t always been great. We’ve all tried to forget the Bazz rat tail. Yeah. This was a thing:
And our old friend Josh Boone used to sport this look: Which is especially sad when you consider he had a nice little min ‘fro going on in high school. This was a much better choice:
If you’d like a reference of excellent braids, see: Robinson, Stanley (Sticks)
I also feel the need to tell you that despite the fact that Travis Knight looked totally normal and nice in college:
He looks like this now (BRACE YOURSELVES):
I apologize in advance for any nightmares that may give you. I know. I’m sorry.
But, guys, there’s so much other beautiful and amazing hair in UConn basketball history. For example, way back in the 1950s, UConn’s all-time rebound leader Art Quimby sported an outstanding pompadour. Elvis would be proud.
Awwwww yeahhhhhhh. And in the 1960s UConn great Wild Wes Bialosuknia had a very Diaco-esque ‘do. Not a hair out of place. Coach D would approve.
Worthy Patterson played for UConn in the 1950s. He had quite the interesting life after college, playing some pro-basketball before becoming a music executive and being married to a woman named Queen. But first, he looked like this, a beautiful man with beautiful hair:
And who knew Walt Dropo, who played for UConn in the 1940s but is more well-known for his 13-season career in Major League Baseball, had this mop of hair?
But probably the prettiest UConn hair of all time belongs to 1999 National Champion Jake Voskuhl and his flowing, boy band locks. YUP. And as an added bonus, I give you Voskuhl with current coach Kevin Freeman’s late-90s mini ‘fro and President Bill Clinton. So much good hair in this picture. And Ricky Moore.
Now we come to my favorite hair era, the 1970s. First is former UConn great and Waterbury native Tony Hanson. Here he is with his phenomenal ’70s hair and Coach Dee Rowe:
That is a glorious mane. But I saved the best for last, guys. The greatest hair UConn has ever seen. The most magnificent of them all. This Afro belonging to Cal Chapman:
Now you’re probably saying, sure, Meghan, that is a great ‘fro, but is it really the best of the best? Yes. Yes, it is. Because this picture, with Chapman and Earl Wilson and some lady exists and it is the most amazing thing these eyes have ever seen. Behold:
I don’t know what is happening in this picture or why that lady looks so salty. But I’m pretty sure Wilson’s suit is velvet, and he is definitely wearing sunglasses indoors, and those giant bow ties with that ‘fro and that ‘stache? I think my work here is done.
[…] Meghan: DHam is the returning champion in this area, though both Kentan Facey and Brimah gave him a run for his money. But I’m taking dark horse freshman Steven “Tall Flow” Enoch to take the crown. [ed. note: Meghan likes UConn hair] […]
