Shabazz Napier is Returning to UConn

UConn’s star guard Shabazz Napier announced via a press release this afternoon that he will return to Storrs for his senior season. The announcement confirms what we had been hearing about Napier’s draft prospects (that they were questionable at best), and reaffirms his obvious desire to build upon his already-impressive UConn legacy.

With Napier back in the mix, expectations will certainly be high for next year’s team. All five starters will return, and they will be joined by three highly-touted freshman, capable of contributing right away. UConn’s starting backcourt of Napier and (soon to be) junior Ryan Boatright will be the best tandem in the depleted and depressing AAC.

UConn will also be counting on the continued development of both junior DeAndre Daniels and sophomore Omar Calhoun. By the close of the 2012-2013 season, Daniels had emerged as a force on both ends of the court for the Huskies. If he can continue to build on his late-season success, he could very well find himself in the first round of next year’s NBA Draft. Calhoun may not be far behind him — having proven to be a fast learner, a clutch shooter, and a solid defender on the wing.

Still, UConn’s success will rest on the narrow shoulders of Napier. Now that his decision is made, it is imperative that he gets healthy and ready to lead. Napier proved himself to be a great leader this past season. Coach Kevin Ollie loves his attitude and his game. With the gang back together, Napier and the Huskies have the potential for a very special season.

  1. Saw UC in Dick Vitale’s pre pre-season top 25. You didn’t mention Olander or Wolf and they could be critical to the equation.

Odd year we had. One of the funnest to watch with the low expectations. Found us a coach too!
