Russ watches UConn Husky Games, Game 5: Rip has a career night, Russ reaches halfway point

Game 5: Jan. 6, 1999
UConn 91 Boston College 78

I love Richard Hamilton. A lot. So naturally I wanted to see a game where he scored. A lot. He had a career-high 39 points in this one on 5-5 shooting from three. As a team, UConn scored the first 12 of the game and never looked back. This game reminds you why BC so desperately wanted to keep UConn out of the ACC — the Eagles just never stood a chance.

UConn Starting Lineup:

G. Ricky Moore
G. Khalid El-Amin
F. Richard Hamilton
F. Kevin Freeman
C. Jake Voskuhl

Three game observations:

  • These last two games have given me a greater appreciation for sophomore Albert Mouring. I mainly remember him as the leader of the 2001 NIT team, but damn he was good (and overshadowed) in 1999.
  • Another thing I’ve noticed these last two games: This UConn team was absurdly efficient in the halfcourt. We all remember how much the 90s Huskies liked to run, but these guys could spread the floor, pass the ball and get to the line as well.
  • Aside from Hamilton, this game was a nice showcase for Edmund Saunders, who was a machine inside: rebounding, blocking shots and scoring. He also finished a nifty alley-oop from Rip.

Three other observations:

  • I really like the late 90s Big East logo with that red ribbon thing. In fact, the late 90s were history’s high point in logo creation. Just look at NBA jerseys from that era.
  • I thought it was really strange to see Conte Forum full. I wonder how long it’s been since they sold out a game.
  • At the time this game was played, UConn led the Big East in scoring, scoring margin, field goal percentage, three-point percentage, rebound margin and assist/turnover ratio.

Russ’s descent to insanity status:

Still cranky. Making coffee.
