Hobbs has served 14 years on the UConn sideline through two stints in Storrs, including the last four seasons as an assistant for Kevin Ollie. Hobbs is a former UConn captain, who played a role in recruiting Richard Hamilton, Caron Butler and Emeka Okafor.
While it’s always disappointing to see someone depart the program, Hobbs’ apparent promotion frees up a spot on the UConn staff. The Huskies have a clear need for a big man coach and can begin exploring their options.
UConn has shown a tendency to favor hiring coaches within the family, and Donyell Marshall might be a good fit if he does not get the Central Connecticut head coaching job. Marshall is reportedly a finalist for the position, along with Stony Brook assistant Jay Young and former UConn assistant Patrick Sellers.
