#1 Kansas
by Peter Bard
National Championships: 3
Head Coach: Phog Allen
Nickname: Jayhawks
Kansas features a good-not-great backcourt of Darnell Valentine and Jo Jo White. Neither Hinrich nor Vaughn ever turned out to be stars, but they can eat some minutes without being overmatched. This team’s strength is obviously in its frontcourt. In fact, Kansas may boast the best overall starting frontcourt in the tournament. Danny Manning is a legend at Kansas, and Paul Pierce is a dynamic athlete with the talent to score against anyone. Chamberlain, of course, might be the most physically dominant player in the history of the sport. Rush brings shooting off the bench, and Lovellette and LaFrentz provide excellent depth inside. Despite only having 3 championships, the Jayhawks could be a dark horse in this tournament. |
