Daniel asks: which UConn uniforms (football/basketball) were the best?
Favorite UConn uniforms is a very personal preference, and I’m sure if my other colleagues answered this question, they’d have some different answers to contribute.
I’ll start with football, because, quite frankly, there isn’t the same rich and insane history of unis as in basketball. I favor the Orlovsky era uniforms with the “C” helmet and “Connecticut” across the front of the jersey. I generally prefer when uniforms say “Connecticut” instead of “UConn” but YMMV.
The new unis introduced in 2013 are pretty great as well. The red outline around the numbers and letters looks particularly cool.
But, surprise! I adore the current grey alternate uniforms. Those chromed out helmets with the red face mask look dope af under the lights in night games.
For basketball, there are just so many excellent choices. For example, in the 60s and 70s, did you know that UConn player’s wore Chucks? Because they did. Check out Tony Hanson looking fly in the 1970s:
Here’s the Washington Post version of the UConn uniform from the late 40s/early50s. I don’t even know what the deal is with the U Conns in script, but it is delightful and deserves to be catalogued here:
But the obvious answer is the unis from the 90s. There is no basketball uniform better than a 1990s basketball uniform. It’s basically a toss up between this one, sported by KO circa 1995.
Look at that beautiful uni. “Connecticut” on the chest, red accents, the details along the sides and edges. I might cry. |
|
Here’s the other best one, modeled by other current coach Ricky Moore circa 1998.
Goddamn. Again, the jersey just looks better when it says “Connecticut.” It’s more majestic and regal. But what’s even better about this uni is the shorts. Behold. Goofy Jonathan Forever |
Tim asks: Seriously, where is Bunkey Jr. going?
We can’t say for sure where Bunkey is headed next (if he’s even going anywhere), but it stands to reason that he will follow his best friend, Sam Cassell Jr. There is some hope for UConn fans, however: In recent weeks, A Dime Back’s Bunkey correspondent Matt Zampini has reported seeing him around campus, engaging in various Bunkesque shenanigans. So he’s still here. For now.
Three Mailbag Questions!
- Storrs South asks: who do you see filling the Memphis job once Pastner leaves for Georgia Tech?
- Kyle asks: now that Geno’s fired, your choice for new coach?
- Penfield asks: who should sing One Shining Moment?
The answer to all three is Russ.
