Player Preview: Saniya Chong

Each week, we’ll offer a preview of what to expect from each member of the defending National Champion UConn Huskies roster.

Saniya Chong
Junior G
5’8

Background:

The background section of these player previews is becoming redundant, as virtually all members of the UConn roster were stars in high school. Chong was no exception, averaging an insane 34.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 9.1 assists per game during her senior season. At UConn, she saw decent playing time as a freshman (17.1 mpg) and flashed legitimate point guard skills — especially ball-handling — enough to project her role to increase the following year.

Last Year:

Chong saw her usage jump a bit — up to 19 minutes — but not enough to significantly impact her stats. She finished the year averaging 5.6 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. Her 20-point performance in an early season loss at Stanford was encouraging but Chong’s numbers plateaued most of the season as she played a complimentary role on a championship roster.

What to Expect:

As long as Moriah Jefferson is on the roster (she’s a senior), Chong is going to be relegated to second string. She has shown enough flashes of talent to hope for a breakout year but it’s unlikely Chong will get the minutes necessary to inflate her stat line much more than last season.

Expect Chong to play the role of backup point guard, but keep close the knowledge that she could start for 80+ percent of other teams in the country.
