Each week, we’ll offer a preview of what to expect from each member of the defending National Champion UConn Huskies roster.

Natalie Butler
Sophomore (RS) C
6’5

Background:

Natalie Butler was a high school star in her native Virginia. In her senior year — one that saw her set school records for scoring, rebounding and blocks — she averaged a triple-double. And not a cheap triple-double. Butler averaged 26.2 points, 17.8 rebounds and 10.1 blocks per game.

She committed to Georgetown and enjoyed immediate success in the Big East. Butler won the conference’s freshman of the year award and averaged 13.9 points and 13.3 rebounds per game.

Last Year:

Unfortunately for Butler, Georgetown was in the midst of a chaotic coaching carousel. First, Terri Williams Flournoy, fled for Auburn. Her replacement, assistant Keith Brown, lasted only eight days before being fired for unprofessional conduct. Brown begat Jim Lewis who coached Butler’s team to a dismal 11-21 record, leading Butler to announce her plans to transfer to UConn.

For coach Geno Auriemma, incredible recruiting success and roster continuity has prevented him from accepting many transfers. Butler is a rare exception. In accordance with NCAA rules, Butler was forced to sit out last season, cheering from the sidelines as the Huskies secured their third consecutive national championship.

What to Expect:

After a year off from competitive games, it’s fair to assume that Butler will take some time to shake off the rust. With center Kiah Stokes graduated and off to the WNBA, Butler could slide immediately into the starting lineup, but may also come off the bench if Auriemma decides to employ a more flexible offense without a true center.

UConn’s offense will predictably revolve around senior Breanna Stewart and Butler’s role will largely depend on the effectiveness of the Huskies to maximize Stewart’s impact. Look for Butler to see the most minutes against teams who struggle to contain Stewart at either forward position, allowing Butler free reign on the low post, and especially on the glass inside.

Overall, this year will be a building year for Butler to lay the groundwork during her sophomore season for what should be an increasing and important role for her final two years on campus.

Side note: teammates have compared Butler’s personality to that of another popular UConn center, Stephanie Dolson, which should generally be a lot of fun.
