Each week, we’ll offer a preview of what to expect from each member of the four-time National Champion UConn Huskies roster.

Jalen Adams
Freshman G
6’1

Background:

Jalen Adams is a five-star freshman guard from Roxbury, Mass. — a locale that many UConn fans will recognize as the hometown of Shabazz Napier.

Adams and UConn had clear mutual interest in each other, which made for a relatively easy recruitment and subsequent commitment. Adams was Kevin Ollie’s first committed recruit for the 2015-2016 class, joined later by Steve Enoch.

Adams has a composite ranking of 23rd in the 2015 class, and fifth among point guards according to 247. So he’s really good, is what I’m saying.

Last Year:

Adams played at high-major breading ground Brewster Academy last year. Despite being on one of the best prep school teams in the country, laden with talent heading to top-flight basketball schools, Adams lead his team in scoring AND assists. In addition to UConn, he received offers from Kansas, Maryland and Louisville, among others.

What to Expect:

Adams will likely be the sixth man this year, the first off the bench and getting plenty of minutes. Don’t be surprised to see three-guard line-ups with Adams, Sterling Gibbs and Rodney Purvis. It will be so fast and so fun and I will love it and so will you.

With grad transfer Gibbs starting at the point, Adams has the opportunity to learn from a veteran before he takes the reins next season. Adams and Gibbs played together over the summer in the Hartford Pro-Am (where they scored a combined 90 points in one game and 79 in another, not real competition or anything, but we like it), so they’ve already got a head start on the team chemistry thing.

Adams has a lot of tools. He can shoot, pass and drive. He’s athletic and can get up for a rebound. He’s everything we’ve come to expect from our big-name UConn guards. I don’t want to set the stakes too high, but let’s just say it wouldn’t be the first time a really talented guard has come off the bench as a freshman and then become an all-time great. But no pressure or anything, Jalen.

Oh, and he can do this. This kid is going to be a lot of fun to watch.
