It's Time to Hate BC Again!

Well, sports fans, it’s finally here! The day we’ve had circled in red on our calendars since the season’s schedule was announced. UConn (4-0) faces Boston College (1-3), the original Big East defector, tonight at Madison Square Garden in the 2K Sports Classic.

A decade ago, our former-conference rival decided to leave the Big East for the ACC’s greener pastures. And then-head coach Jim Calhoun was not happy about it. He issued an Irish curse, “I will not play Boston College as long as I’m here.” BC was dead to us. We rooted against them in every game they played (Except when they played Duke. Then we rooted for the floor to open up and swallow both teams whole.) But tonight, under Coach Kevin Ollie, UConn looks to renew the rivalry with our old New England foe.

Look for some old-school killer guard play, with Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright leading the Huskies, and sophomore standout Oliver Hanlon helming the Eagles. Hanlon leads the ACC with 24.5 points per game.

DeAndre Daniels came alive in UConn’s game against Boston University, leading the team with 24 points. Hopefully that performance will carry over. Junior Ryan Anderson, who is averaging 16.3 points per game, anchors BC’s frontcourt.

Notes:

  • Coach Kevin Ollie went 8-0 in his playing days against BC. This feels like a good omen.
  • Shabazz Napier currently leads the team in all per game stats (points: 13.5, rebounds: 9.5, assists: 7.8, and steals: 1.5) except blocks. Amidah Brimah has that one with four blocks per game.
  • UConn and BC last faced off in BC’s final Big East season on January 5, 2005, when the Huskies lost 75-70.
  • UConn leads the series 54-35 and won 28 of the last 31 meetings between the two teams.
  • The winner of this game plays the winner of the Indiana/Washington game tomorrow night, and BC, I mean, whoever loses tonight, will play the loser.

  1. Your piece got me pumped up. I want to go to Rogie’s in Cleveland Circle tonight decked head to toe in Husky blue and get so drunk I become the Hulk and take out half the freshman class at BC with Ugg boots, leggings and North Face jackets left in shreds among their carcasses on the nasty floor. Christmas could come early.

  2. Reasons to hate BC:

    1) The students. They’re the worst. People go to BC for the same reason they go to GW: they have the money to go to a good school, but they aren’t smart enough.
    2) It’s not in Boston. BC is in Chestnut Hill, which is Boston’s douchy, entitled brat cousin.
    3) The students again. Trying to get around Brighton when they’re moving in is a nightmare because they’re all stupid and so are their parents.
    4) Jared Dudley.
