The UConn coaching tree grew on Sunday, when news broke that Donyell Marshall would be named head coach at Central Connecticut. It was first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.
Marshall takes over for Howie Dickenman, who was an assistant under Jim Calhoun at UConn before coaching at his alma mater for 20 seasons and leading the Blue Devils to three NCAA Tournament appearances.
Marshall joins UConn coach Kevin Ollie, Steve Pikiell (Rutgers), Dave Leitao (DePaul) and Tom Moore (Quinnipiac) as former Husky players or assistants to join the Division I head coaching ranks. Scott Burrell is also the head coach of Division II Southern Connecticut State, while Karl Hobbs was recently named associate head coach under Pikiell at Rutgers.
Former UConn assistant Pat Sellers and current Stony Brook assistant Jay Young were the other finalists for the CCSU job.
Following a 15-year career in the NBA, Marshall has served as an assistant coach since 2010, with stints at George Washington, Rider, Buffalo and the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League.
