UConn forward Rakim Lubin will transfer, according to a tweet sent by his mother on Monday.

The freshman from Miami appeared in 24 games last season, averaging one point and one rebound per contest. He played a season-high 13 minutes in the Huskies’ 57-54 win over Cincinnati in the American Athletic Conference quarterfinals, where he grabbed three rebounds.

With Phil Nolan, Amida Brimah and Kentan Facey all expected to return, plus the addition of Steve Enoch, front court minutes would have likely been tough for Lubin to find next season.

His departure frees up a scholarship for UConn to address another area of need, either through an uncommitted high school senior or a potential transfer with immediate eligibility. The Huskies have two spots open for next season — or three, if Nnamdi Amilo comes back as a walk-on — and could benefit from adding a transfer guard who can share ball-handling duties with incoming freshman Jalen Adams.

As for Lubin, he has plenty of time to figure out where to go next. Before committing to UConn, he was interested in Auburn, Georgia Tech and others.
