The American Athletic Conference has begun the three-day process of revealing the winners of this season’s conference awards. On Tuesday, the All-Conference and All-Rookie teams were announced, featuring several familiar faces.
UConn senior guard Ryan Boatright was named to the All-Conference First Team — one of two unanimous selections along with SMU’s Nic Moore. Boatright’s selection is hardly a surprise. He led the conference in scoring, averaging 17.8 points per game this season and has been a constant presence on the AAC’s weekly honor roll.
Freshman Daniel Hamilton was named to the All-Rookie Team. He was also a unanimous selection, as was ECU guard BJ Tyson. Hamilton elevated his play during the second half of the season and proved to be UConn’s second-best player. Hamilton’s 7.6 rebounds per game were the second-highest in the AAC this season.
Hamilton and center Amida Brimah were also Honorable Mentions to the All-Conference teams.
Individual awards will be announced on Wednesday and Thursday. Boatright and Moore are the two favorites for Conference Player of the Year. SMU’s team success places Moore as the frontrunner. Hamilton should win the Rookie of the Year award. Brimah is a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year, though Memphis big man Austin Nichols will give him a run for his money. If Pet Lenehan doesn’t win Scholar-Athlete of the Year, someone be trippin’.
